Martha Smith
As a fibre/mixed-media artist I have always worked with fabrics and threads. The textures and colours of material are the most inspiring design elements for me, followed by form.
I am process oriented creating collages & assemblages and much of my art is 3D and figurative. Rarely do I sketch out an idea but assemble my pieces in an intuitive manner. I embellish the figures and collages with my collection of botanicals, jewelry bits, paper, yarn, found objects and ephemera.
An educator by profession with a degree in Women’s Studies from York University and Diploma in Fashion Arts from Ryerson, I started in my early teens sewing clothes for myself and my younger sisters’ dolls. This led to work in fashion and fabric retail and with a large sewing notions company doing in-store demonstrations. I pursued secondary school teaching certification in my mid-twenties at U of T. Throughout decades of teaching, I always maintained part-time businesses such as jewellery production and designing and marketing paper making kits.
I am now a resident of Brighton, Ontario with my husband and three feline child substitutes.
